Most people searching for a room in the Mount Washington Valley start with North Conway. Bartlett and Glen, a few miles up the road, are often the better base. They sit right at the doors of Attitash, Story Land, Crawford Notch and the Saco River, and they are quieter than the outlet strip. This guide covers Bartlett NH lodging by type, so you can match the place to the trip, with properties from our directory.
Bartlett and Glen at a glance
Bartlett is a town in Carroll County, surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest. The 2020 census counted 3,200 residents. The town takes in the village of Glen, plus parts of Kearsarge and Intervale that it shares with neighboring Conway. It is home to Attitash Mountain Resort and the Story Land theme park.
Two roads define the area. Glen sits where U.S. Route 302 and NH Route 16 split, about 5 miles north of the center of North Conway. From that junction, Route 16 runs north through Pinkham Notch toward Gorham, and Route 302 runs west through Bartlett village and on into Crawford Notch. Where you stay along those roads shapes your trip more than anything else.
- Glen and the Route 302/16 junction: closest to Story Land, North Conway and Jackson.
- Along Route 302 near Attitash: ski-in access in winter and the Saco River in summer.
- West toward Crawford Notch: the quietest stretch, best for hikers.
Slopeside and resort stays at Attitash
Attitash is a ski area on Route 302 in Bartlett that dates to 1938 and has two peaks, Attitash and Bear Peak. If skiing is the point of the trip, staying at the base saves you the morning drive and the parking lot.
- Grand Summit Hotel at Attitash is a slopeside, ski-in/ski-out hotel with guest rooms and suites, fire pits, a heated outdoor saltwater pool, a sauna and a fitness center. It also has one of the larger meeting and event spaces in the valley, which makes it a common choice for groups and weddings. North Conway is about 15 minutes away.
- Attitash Village offers family-friendly suites and condominiums with full kitchens, plus indoor and outdoor pools. It describes itself as a four-season resort, and the kitchens make it a good fit for longer stays and families who would rather not eat every meal out.
Condo resorts for families
Condo-style resorts are the workhorses of Bartlett and Glen lodging. You get more room, a kitchen and usually a pool, which matters on a rainy day or a cold night.
- The Seasons is a condominium resort with nightly and weekly rentals. Its clubhouse has an indoor heated pool, a hot tub and a dry sauna, along with a game room with pool tables, air hockey and ping pong. It sits just west of North Conway, less than a mile from Attitash.
- Nordic Village Resort on Route 16 has a range of units, from chateau rooms and studios to one- and two-bedroom units and penthouses. It is pet friendly and oriented toward valley views. The resort uses a Jackson identity in its own materials, though its mailing address is in Glen, so it is a natural base for both Jackson and Story Land.
Small inns and bed and breakfasts
If you want a host rather than a front desk, Bartlett has small inns with real character.
- Covered Bridge House is a five-room bed and breakfast on the Saco River, next to the original Bartlett Covered Bridge from the 1850s. In summer, guests can swim or tube in the river behind the inn. It is a good pick for couples who want quiet and a real breakfast.
- Golden Apple Inn in Glen has 17 guest rooms and a family suite, a pool and a fire pit. By its own count it is about 5 minutes from Story Land and 4 minutes from Attitash, which makes it an easy family base.
- The Aurora Inn and Cottages on Route 302 offers barn-converted suites, private cottages and motel-style rooms with kitchenettes and fireplaces, plus a seasonal outdoor pool and a barrel sauna. The Bear Notch trail system is right outside, used for hiking and biking in warm months and skiing and snowmobiling in winter.
Quiet stays toward Crawford Notch
West of Bartlett village, Route 302 climbs toward Crawford Notch and the traffic thins out. This is where hikers and people who want dark skies tend to stay.
- North Colony Motel and Cottages on Route 302 is an affordable motel and cottage property with mountain views, an inground pool, picnic tables, grills, a fire pit and a large playground. It has room for trailers in winter, which matters to snowmobilers, and it puts you close to Crawford Notch State Park.
Choosing the right base by season
Spring. April is a shoulder month in the valley. Snow often lingers on the upper mountains while trails at lower elevations turn to mud. A condo with a pool and a kitchen is a good call for a spring visit, and it is a sensible time to scout properties for a summer trip.
Summer. Story Land and the Saco River are the big draws. Glen is the most convenient base for Story Land; the river inns near Bartlett are best for swimming and tubing.
Fall. Route 302 through Crawford Notch and Bear Notch Road are among the area's classic foliage drives. Staying west of the Glen junction puts you on the scenic side of the morning traffic.
Winter. Slopeside at Attitash is hard to beat for skiers. Families who split time between the slopes and the pool often prefer a condo resort with an indoor pool.
Tips for booking
- Check the map, not just the town name. Many properties market themselves as North Conway or Jackson. Bartlett, Glen and Intervale addresses can be closer to where you actually want to be.
- Ask about minimum stays. Condo resorts and small inns often set minimum nights on weekends and holiday periods.
- Confirm pet policies directly. Policies vary by unit type even within one property.
- Book directly when you can. It is the most reliable way to ask questions about room layout, stairs, parking and kitchen setup.
