King Pine has long been the kind of ski area families pick for a first season on snow. Now the small mountain in Madison, along with its sister resort, Purity Spring, is in line for its biggest round of investment in years. Some of the changes arrive this winter; others are planned over the next few seasons. Here is what has been announced.
King Pine at a glance
As reported by Boston.com on October 22, 2026, King Pine opened in 1962 and has:
- 45 skiable acres
- A 350-foot vertical drop
- Six lifts
- 17 downhill trails, most of them beginner and intermediate
The property also offers night skiing, snowtubing, cross-country and snowshoe trails, ice skating, and slopeside ski-in, ski-out lodging at the adjacent Purity Spring Resort. Boston.com describes the area as known for its family-friendly atmosphere, affordability and deep discounts.
New for the 2026-27 season
According to resort officials quoted by Boston.com, skiers and riders will find these changes this winter:
- Upgraded snowmaking
- Updated trail signage
- New family apres-ski experiences
- A refreshed tavern
- New guest lockers
- Full Indy Pass membership. King Pine is joining Indy Pass as a full member, which matters if you already hold that pass or are deciding which pass to buy this season. Check the Indy Pass and King Pine sites for the specific access terms before you plan a trip around it.
Planned by 2030
The longer-range plans are larger. By 2030, the resort says, guests will get expanded trails and a new base lodge with live music and event space. No construction dates for the lodge were given in the announcement, so treat 2030 as the target rather than a fixed opening date.
Changes at Purity Spring Resort
Purity Spring, which the Hoyt family opened in 1911, is getting attention too. Boston.com reports that:
- A multi-million-dollar guest room renovation is in the planning stages.
- Extensive landscaping, fencing, signage and exterior paint updates are already under way.
- The resort's restaurant, Traditions, will receive an interior renovation in the coming year.
If you are booking a stay this winter, it is worth asking the resort whether any of the work will be going on during your dates.
Who is behind the investment
The Hoyt family owns King Pine along with Danforth Bay Camping and RV Resort, Purity Spring Resort and Tohkomeupog Summer Camp for Boys, and has been part of the Mount Washington Valley for more than 115 years, according to Boston.com. The work will be overseen by Ali Hoyt, the new managing partner and the fifth generation of family leadership, and Paul J. Morra, a two-time Emmy Award-winning producer who becomes managing partner of development, design and brand. Morra is a former Tohkomeupog camper with a second home in Madison. The other managing partners are Steven Hoyt and Andrew Mahoney.
In a statement, Morra said the properties have "a special history and a loyal following going back more than 115 years," and that the goal is to build on that with improved guest amenities. Hoyt said she wants to carry forward the spirit of her father, Bob, who she said "genuinely loved engaging with our guests."
What it means for your winter plans
For families, the headline is that a small, affordable mountain is adding comforts without changing its character: better snowmaking for more reliable conditions, a refreshed tavern for the end of the day, and apres programs aimed at kids and parents. For Indy Pass holders, King Pine becomes a new full-member option in the Mount Washington Valley.
Opening dates for the 2026-27 season had not been included in the announcement, so check King Pine's own site before you pack the car.
