When Do New Hampshire Ski Areas Open? A 2026-27 Opening Day Guide
By the first week of November, the snow guns are the loudest sound in the White Mountains. Every ski area in New Hampshire wants to be first, and every skier wants to know when the lifts will finally turn. Opening day depends on cold nights for snowmaking as much as on natural snow, so dates move around. This guide collects the projected opening dates published so far and offers some tips for planning an early-season trip.
Important: The dates below are projections, not promises. Resorts announce official openings only when conditions allow, often just days ahead. Always check the official resort site before you drive.

The early birds
Bretton Woods sits at the foot of the Presidential Range across from the Omni Mount Washington Resort. It tops the projected list this year. For the official date, watch the Bretton Woods website.
Black Mountain in Jackson is one of the state's classic small hills, and it appears near the top of this year's projections.
Loon Mountain in Lincoln, right off Interstate 93, is typically among the first big resorts to open thanks to its snowmaking. If you are staying in Lincoln, the town's ski shops, including Sport Thoma and Rodgers Ski Shop, are good places to get gear tuned before the first run.
Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch is state-owned and has some of the steepest terrain in the East. It is projected to open over Thanksgiving weekend.
Thanksgiving weekend and beyond
Thanksgiving weekend, November 26 to 29, 2026, is the traditional kickoff for many New England skiers. Waterville Valley is projected to open November 28. Most of the remaining areas, including Attitash, Cranmore, Gunstock, Mount Sunapee, and Ragged, are projected for the first weekend of December, with smaller and community-focused hills such as Dartmouth Skiway and Whaleback later in the month.
Early-season tips
- Expect limited terrain. Opening day usually means a handful of trails on machine-made snow. Check each resort's trail report before you buy a ticket.
- Buy tickets online. Many resorts now price lift tickets dynamically, with lower prices for advance purchase. Check the resort site for current pricing.
- Get your gear ready now. Tune shops get busy right before opening. In North Conway, Stan and Dan's Sports and other shops in our directory handle tunes and rentals.
- Dress for the cold. Early-season days are short and often windy. Bring a neck gaiter and goggles even if the forecast looks mild.
- Have a backup plan. If a warm spell delays the opening, the White Mountains still offer winter hiking, scenic drives, and cozy inns.
Cross-country skiers
Nordic centers depend more on natural snow, so they often open later than the downhill areas. Our directory includes the Bretton Woods Nordic Center, Jackson XC, and the Gunstock Nordic Center. Check their sites for grooming reports once the snow starts falling.
Plan your trip
Browse our ski and lodging listings to build a first-weekend trip. And when an official opening date is announced, it will be posted on the resort's own website first.
