The Sugar River is short, only about 27 miles long, but it ties together two of the most interesting small communities in western New Hampshire. It runs west through Newport and Claremont before joining the Connecticut River. Visitors heading to Lake Sunapee or Dartmouth often pass straight through this valley. This guide makes the case for stopping, with a list of things to do in Claremont NH and Newport that covers all four seasons.

Getting oriented

Both towns are in Sullivan County, and they play different roles in it.

Claremont is the county's only city, with 12,949 residents at the 2020 census. It sits in the upper Connecticut River valley and is the core city of the Lebanon-Claremont micropolitan area. Its downtown is anchored by City Hall and the Civil War memorial shown at the top of this page.

Newport is the county seat, with 6,299 residents in 2020. It is about 43 miles west-northwest of Concord, along the Sugar River at the junction of NH Routes 10 and 11. The town includes the villages of Kelleyville, Guild and North Newport. Newport has long been known for maple sugaring and apple orchards. On the North Branch of the Sugar River, the Corbin Covered Bridge burned in 1993 and was later rebuilt.

The two downtowns are close enough to cover in one day, and both make good bases for exploring the wider Dartmouth-Sunapee region.

Arrowhead: a community hill in the city

Arrowhead Recreation Area is Claremont's year-round outdoor hub. It is a nonprofit and is run entirely by volunteers. Its stated goal is to offer activities throughout the year, including tubing, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking and community events, for people of all ages from the area and beyond.

In winter, the draw is tubing and skiing and riding, with tickets sold through the Arrowhead website. Because the hill depends on volunteers, lift operations depend on staffing, and Arrowhead posts up-to-the-minute updates on its Facebook page. Check there before you drive, especially early in the season.

If you live nearby, Arrowhead asks visitors to consider volunteering or sponsoring. For a hill of this kind, that support is what keeps the lifts turning.

Mountain biking with The Wheel House

When the snow melts, Arrowhead becomes a biking destination. The Wheel House, an employee-owned bike shop in Claremont, points riders to more than 20 miles of hand-built community trails at Arrowhead. The shop says the location offers big bike park features right within the city limits.

The Wheel House sells mountain, gravel, kids' and electric bikes, along with components, apparel and accessories. It also offers assembly and service for all bikes, and you can schedule service through its website. It also organizes community rides. The shop says its team has more than 40 years of combined experience and highlights its 255 five-star Google reviews.

Shop hours, as posted on its site, are Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Sundays. If you are coming from out of town, stopping at the shop first is a good way to get trail advice before you ride.

Newport Opera House

On Main Street in Newport, the Newport Opera House calls itself the place where community meets the performing arts. The building is home to the Newport Opera House Association, which produces community shows and events and relies on members and volunteers.

The association's list of past productions gives a feel for its range: Oliver!, Annie Get Your Gun, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Footloose, Guys and Dolls, Arsenic and Old Lace, Our Town, Fiddler on the Roof and It's a Wonderful Life as a live radio play. Alongside its theater, the opera house hosts dances, concerts and special events. It also posts audition information, so locals can get involved on stage.

Schedules change through the year, so check the opera house website for upcoming shows and tickets before planning an evening around a performance.

Bascom Road Blueberry Farm

Bascom Road Blueberry Farm in Newport is a family-owned and operated pick-your-own and produce farm. It was voted number one among the top five berry picking spots in New Hampshire in WMUR's Viewers' Choice in both 2024 and 2025.

Visitors describe highbush plants loaded with blueberries and a relaxed, tidy farm. The farm also has a small shop, and its own visitor quotes mention farm-fresh eggs, cheeses, local meat, vegetables and homemade jam, as well as blueberry bushes for your own garden.

Pick-your-own is a seasonal activity. Before you go, check the farm's PYO information and happenings pages for current picking conditions and shop hours.

Protectworth Brewing

For an evening out in Newport, Protectworth Brewing pairs local beer with live entertainment. Its motto is "every sip is worth protecting," and it keeps an events calendar of live shows, including a recurring band night and a monthly open mic on Thursdays. Its website has a beer menu and a shop with local merchandise.

When to visit

Each season brings out a different side of the valley.

  • Winter. Arrowhead's tubing and ski lift are the main event, run by volunteers when conditions and staffing allow. Evenings at the opera house or the brewery round out a cold-weather day.
  • Spring and fall. Biking season at Arrowhead, with The Wheel House on hand for tune-ups and trail advice.
  • Summer. Blueberry picking at Bascom Road, long rides on the Arrowhead trails, and live music nights in Newport.

Because so much here is community-run or seasonal, the best habit is simple: check the website or Facebook page of each place the day before you go.

A day in the Sugar River Valley

Here is one way to spend a day, adjusted for the season:

1. Morning in Claremont. In warm months, stop at The Wheel House for trail advice and ride the Arrowhead trails. In winter, go tubing or skiing at Arrowhead when the lifts are running.

2. Lunch and a walk. Explore downtown Claremont around City Hall, then drive east along the Sugar River to Newport.

3. Afternoon in Newport. Visit Bascom Road Blueberry Farm during picking season, or look for the rebuilt Corbin Covered Bridge.

4. Evening. Catch a show at the Newport Opera House or hear live music at Protectworth Brewing.

Practical tips

  • Check Facebook for Arrowhead. As a volunteer-run hill, it posts lift updates there first.
  • Mind shop hours. The Wheel House is closed Sundays.
  • Plan around the season. Blueberries, bikes and skis each have their own window. Each website has current details.
  • Combine with nearby trips. Our Lake Sunapee guides cover more of the region.
