The Merrimack Valley is a region along the Merrimack River that crosses the New Hampshire and Massachusetts state line. The river is one of the larger waterways in New England and has shaped the lives of the people along it for millennia. This guide covers businesses in Concord, Manchester, Windham, Derry and Salem.
That location is a big part of the appeal for couples. Searles Castle, for example, is about 30 minutes north of Boston, which is easy for out-of-state guests. The venues range from a hilltop castle to a pond-front banquet center and a modern garden estate. Late May is the start of the outdoor wedding season, and it is also when many couples planning next year's wedding begin touring venues.
This guide covers four venues and four vendors in the region: a bridal boutique, a bridal and formalwear salon, a florist and a caterer. It is a starting point, not a complete list.
Venues
Searles Castle, Windham
Searles Castle describes itself as an iconic hilltop mansion in southern New Hampshire, about 30 minutes north of Boston. The property features its historic architecture, gardens and panoramic views from the top of a scenic hill. It hosts both intimate ceremonies and larger celebrations, with options for an indoor reception or an outdoor celebration in a draped tent.
If you have ever wanted a fairy-tale setting, this is the most dramatic option in the region. The castle also hosts corporate functions and private events, and it keeps a list of preferred vendors that can help with planning.
Castleton Banquet and Conference Center, Windham
Castleton Banquet and Conference Center sits along the banks of Cobbetts Pond in Windham. Cobbetts Pond is a 302-acre pond about two miles long, with a shoreline shaped like the number 8. Castleton offers indoor and outdoor locations on its grounds, so you can hold your ceremony, cocktail hour and reception in different spaces without moving guests to a second site. It also offers private waterfront dining, event menus and a preferred vendors list.
A waterfront setting is a natural fit for a late spring or summer wedding, and the pond makes a lovely backdrop for photos.
Hyla Brook Estate, Derry
Hyla Brook Estate is a private nine-acre garden estate in Derry that offers modern farmhouse events. It describes itself as a modern white venue, not a typical rustic barn. The estate has six outdoor ceremony locations and four outdoor cocktail hour locations, each with a backup plan in case of bad weather.
Its site lists exclusive estate access for up to 15 hours or hourly rentals, two getting-ready suites with hair and makeup stations, and farm and round tables. It also covers catering, bar packages, day-of coordination and accommodations. For couples who want an outdoor wedding but worry about the weather, the built-in backup plans are a real advantage.
Kimball Jenkins, Concord
Kimball Jenkins is an arts center on North Main Street in Concord with more than 40 years of history in arts education and historic preservation. Each year it offers more than 200 programs reaching more than 10,000 people, including classes, exhibitions and community events.
It also hosts private functions, events and weddings, with capacity for up to 200 guests. The Carolyn Jenkins Gallery on the main floor of the Carriage House shows work by regional and national contemporary artists, so your guests are surrounded by art. Free public parking is available on campus. This is a great choice for couples who want a historic, creative setting in the capital city.
Attire
A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique, Concord
A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique in Concord carries a curated collection of bridal gowns, including designs from Justin Alexander and Lillian West by Justin Alexander. It offers in-store and virtual appointments, alterations and prom dresses. The boutique says it welcomes brides, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and couples starting their planning together.
Bella Sera Bridal, Salem
Bella Sera Bridal in Salem offers wedding dresses, mother-of-the-occasion dresses, tuxedos and suits, black tie and prom. Having bridal and menswear in one salon helps when you want the whole wedding party to look coordinated. Appointments are booked through its site, and its stylists aim to make the experience easy and welcoming.
Flowers
Cobblestone Design, Concord
Cobblestone Design, also known as Cobblestone Florist, is at One Capital Plaza, 81 North Main Street, in downtown Concord. It offers fresh flowers and arrangements made to order, plants, permanent botanicals and home decor. Shoppers can step into the cooler and pick their own stems to build a bouquet. Visit in person to see seasonal flowers and talk through your ideas before you commit to wedding florals.
Catering
Celebrations Catering, Manchester
Celebrations Catering offers full-service catering, private catering and wedding catering, with buffet, plated and family-style service. It also offers drop-off catering, an Instant Buffet service and a barbecue option called Eli's BBQ. If your venue allows outside catering, it is worth getting a menu from a caterer that offers several service styles.
A planning timeline
Every wedding is different, but this rough timeline helps.
1. Twelve to eighteen months out: set your budget and guest count, then tour venues. Popular weekends book early.
2. Ten to twelve months out: book your venue and caterer. Ask the venue for its preferred vendor list.
3. Eight to ten months out: shop for your gown or suit. Allow time for ordering and alterations.
4. Six to eight months out: book your florist and finalize your color palette.
5. Three to four months out: send invitations and confirm details with your vendors.
6. One month out: final fittings, final guest count and a walkthrough at the venue.
Taking care of your guests
Many weddings bring guests from out of town, so think about their experience early. Hyla Brook Estate includes accommodations information on its site, and both Searles Castle and Castleton keep preferred vendor lists that can point you toward trusted local help. Send guests a short note with venue directions, parking details and a weather reminder, since late spring and early fall evenings in New Hampshire can turn cool. A simple welcome bag with local treats is a thoughtful touch that does not take much planning.
Questions to ask every venue
- How many guests can you seat for dinner?
- What happens if it rains on an outdoor ceremony?
- Do you require your own caterer, or can we bring one in?
- How many hours do we have, and when can vendors arrive to set up?
- Is there a getting-ready space?
- Where will guests park, and are there hotels nearby?
