A Perfect Fall Weekend in the White Mountains

Two days, one ridge, and the slow drive that frames them both — a field guide to the Whites in peak color.

The trick to the White Mountains in October is to start early and resist the urge to hurry. The color is best at the pace of a walk, and the light is best at the pace of a slow drive.

Saturday: the drive

Take the Kancamagus at sunrise, before the lots fill. Stop at the Lower Falls swim hole and the covered bridge at Lincoln. By mid-morning, trade the car for a trail and climb toward the ridge.

Sunday: the ridge

Franconia Ridge above tree line is the long view the color was made for. Pack layers, leave early, and plan the dinner reservation before you leave the inn.

The dinner

End at a country inn with a stone hearth and a short menu. The whole trip is, in the end, an excuse for the evening — and the color is what gets you there.
