Winter on the Seacoast: A Quiet Escape
When the boardwalk empties and the harbor goes still, Portsmouth becomes the best winter walk in New England.
The Seacoast in winter is the city the summer crowds miss. The brick lanes clear out, the restaurants slow down, and the harbor takes on the quiet, working calm of the off-season.
The walk
Start at Prescott Park, follow the harbor light to the tugs, and loop back through Market Street. The whole thing is a half hour if you don't stop — and you should.
The meal
The oysters are still local, the dining rooms still have their fireplaces, and the reservation that's impossible in July is a walk-in in February.
The point
Winter on the coast isn't a substitute for summer. It's a different city — quieter, colder, and in its own way, the one worth the trip.
